AT&T pushed Bristol-Myers Squibb from its No. 1 ranking to take the top spot on the list of 100 Best Corporate Citizens 2013 from CR Magazine, followed by Mattel.
Bristol-Myers Squibb, which topped the annual ranking in 2012, took the No. 3 spot this year. Eaton, Intel, Gap, Hasbro, Merck, Campbell Soup Co. and Coca-Cola Enterprises rounded out the top 10 companies on the best corporate citizens list.
The 100 Best List documents 298 data points of disclosure and B2B Email List performance measures collected from publicly available information in seven categories: environment, climate change, employee relations, human rights, governance, finance and philanthropy. The list ranks every company in the Russell 1000 Index. The methodology for generating the list is governed by a Ratings and Rankings Committee of the Corporate Responsibility Officers Association (CROA).
The magazine ranked Johnson Controls as the best company in the environment category, followed by IBM, Johnson & Johnson, Sprint-Nextel and Advanced Micro Devices.
The top-ranked company for climate-change efforts was UPS, which was 24th overall, followed by Exelon (99th), PepsiCo (43rd), IBM (11th) and Spectra Energy Corp (13th).
The top five overall best companies did not score as well in the climate change category, moving to double-digit positions, except for Eaton’s sixth place ranking. AT&T, for example, was ranked 15th and Mattel was ranked 77th.
For the climate change category, companies are reviewed for 56 data elements, which contribute 16.5 percent of the total, according to CR Magazine. The environmental category contributes another 19.5 percent of total, making these categories relevant for about one third of the percentage points valued in the total weighted average score.
The list saw a lot of change between 2012 and 2013 with 26 companies joining the ranking; up from 22 new additions in 2012. Some 32 companies rose in ranking in 2013 an average of 20 spots. Last year, 43 companies rose an average of 17 spots.
